Master's minor degree program in Gender and Religion

The Master (minor) program in Gender and Religion offers students an exciting and interesting complement to the University of Bern's Master programs in Theology and Religious Studies, as well as the programs in the social and cultural sciences. The program familiarizes students with the theoretical and methodological fundamentals of gender research and teaches them how to view topics in theology and inter-religious studies from a gender-related perspective. The Master minor in Gender and Religion helps you enhance and round out your qualifications for both academic and non-academic professions.

Details of program

Students in the Gender and Religion program

  • learn how to utilize gender as an analytic category in a theological and/or inter-religious context;
  • are taught how to analyze gender discourses, affairs, relationships and stereotypes in relationship to historical, cultural and religious circumstances;
  • acquire the ability to apply aspects of gender in interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary contexts;
  • attain the skills needed to effectively utilize religiously motivated gender attitudes in practical professional applications; and become familiarized with basic texts, traditions and discourses in theology and inter-religious studies.

Note:

  • Module II courses are organized each year by the Study Commission and presented to the Faculty of Theology for approval.
  • Courses in the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences can be applied to Module II. Courses at other faculties and universities may not be applied to the program of study unless approved beforehand by the Study Commission and/or the Faculty of Theology.
  • Students individually select their Module II courses from the list of courses approved by the Faculty of Theology.
  • After consulting with the Study Commission, students may also choose another Module II supplementary subject focus in addition to the two described above.

Requirements

Individual academic requirements

The following academic qualifications are required for admission to the study program in Gender and Religion (minor):

a) Bachelor's degree from a Swiss university with a minor in a branch of studies listed in Appendix 1 to the plan of studies.

b)

 Bachelor's degree with a minor in another branch of studies (with special request for admission). Additional attainments may be required. The ECTS credits will be listed separately in the diploma supplement as extracurricular attainments.

Students must consult with the academic student advice of the Faculty of Theology before they can begin the master's degree program.

The bachelor's degree may not be more than 15 years old. Exceptions are possible where justified.


Language requirements

For certain courses sufficient knowledge of French and English, along with knowledge of German, may be required.

Doctoral studies

The Faculty of Theology offers students the possibility to contribute to further research in their field with a dissertation.

Career possibilities

Like any course of study in the humanities, the program offered here does not prepare students for a specific career but instead teaches them methods and skills that can be applied in a variety of fields (e.g. research, media, education, diplomacy, culture, dialog between religions).
